English-Language Theater

Our core audience will always remains important to us, yet we feel there is more we can do to bring English-language theater to a wider audience in Nagoya. As part of our outreach efforts we are emphasizing two key points for our 2019 season: Accessibility and Inclusivity.

We’ve scheduled two shows in 2019 that can be enjoyed by anyone with a basic foundation in English. Aesop’s Fables and The Gift of the Magi are fast, fun shows that are also easy to follow. These stories remind of us of what is universally important in our human experience. They also show us how values and morals can be similar and different between Western and Japanese cultures. We’ve designed these shows to be entertaining for both young and old, and by both beginner and advanced English speakers. These are great shows that can be seen as a family, with English everyone can understand, and with interesting messages to discuss.

We hope our shows will create conversation and motivate audiences to study other languages. We want to remove barriers and change people’s minds. Theater is exciting and fun! And, experiencing it an a foreign language is a great way to learn another culture.

The Gift of the Magi

The classic story of gift-giving and personal sacrifice by O. Henry has been adapted for stage and given a romantic and comical spin by playwright Jon Jory. The story centers on the young, poor couple of Della and Jim. Their love for each other is unquestionable and their only desire is to ensure the other’s happiness. Christmas is approaching and neither have enough money to buy a proper gift. Unbeknownst to each other, Della and Jim both make great personal sacrifices in order to procure the money needed. A special and memorable lesson is learned by all when they realize that the gift of love is more valuable than anything money can buy.
