We have something very special for you. Content Creator Gihan has put together a very cool mini-doc featuring interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from Nagoya Players’ recent production of Romeo & Juliet.

There’s lots to see and learn in the video, including insights from the lead actors, Bruno (ROMEO) and Tiara (JULIET), as well as Show Director Ana Valdes Lim. Many others from the Cast & Crew are also featured.

We can’t thank Gihan enough for capturing these moments and voices from the show. This mini-doc really gives you a great sense of what makes NP unique and highlights the wonderful people involved in the making of our shows.

(日本語は英語に続く)  Romeo & Juliet has taken its place in the pantheon of Nagoya Players’ best shows. The cast performed spectacularly to packed houses and excited audiences from beginning to end. The entire production cycle, from planning, casting, auditions, to rehearsal, was filled with discovery, growth, and accomplishment, making it one of NP’s most successful projects.

When Ana Valdes Lim first pitched the show, we were intrigued by the idea of updating Shakespeare for a modern audience. During planning, we wanted to maintain the essence of what makes Shakespeare special, specifically the poetry and plot, so a lot of work went into the script. Changes and cuts were thoughtfully made in order to create a streamlined version of the famed tale that would appeal to an international, mixed audience. It was a tricky process, as any change to the Bard’s work could be met with criticism, but in the end Ana’s adaptation was filled with ingenuity and creativity and masterfully done.

With the script in place, we then began work on musical elements with Composer Ben Dorman. He produced three lyrical pieces as well as music for the show’s choreography, movement, and combat, after which, Choreographers Jeff Fritch and Valeriya Takazato began incorporating dance into the show. Midway through rehearsals, more music was needed, and Composers Michael Shoults and Joseph Andal contributed additional compositions. Louise Dai became our vocal coach and did fantastic work arranging the vocals for Home Sweet Home and Requiem. Louise also featured as a soloist on Requiem and closed the show with an absolutely incredible ballad of love and loss. Weaving all this wonderful music, singing, and sound design together was Shawn Mahler.

Returning NP performer Bruno Beltran as ROMEO and newcomer Tiara Beneragama as JULIET led the cast. Bruno and Tiara bore heavy loads as leads but handled their responsibilities with determination and rigor. English is not Bruno’s first language, which made his role more challenging, yet week after week he refined his performance, improving both his language and acting skills. Tiara blossomed as well, learning how to feel comfortable while performing intimate scenes. After many months of rehearsal and practice, all their hard work paid off, and they delivered a weekend of passionate, romantic, tragic performances.

Veteran performers Atsumi Yamamoto as NURSE and Emily Bailey as MERCUTIO also joined the cast. Atsumi got rave reviews for her comedic take on NURSE, and Emily’s reimagining of MERCUTIO and their relationship with ROMEO was fascinating to watch.

R&J’s cast is also notable for its large number of first-time and second-time performers. Louise Dai brought a hard-edged, villainy to her role as TYBALT. Richard Harris’ street-dealing APOTHECARY was an image that won’t be soon forgotten. Akihiko Shiokawa’s LORD CAPULET was a force of nature. Nandini Shah as LADY CAPULET and Asumi Ida as PRINCE found their inner voices and delivered powerful, emotional scenes. Kory Alexander Majansky wowed audiences with a jaw-dropping, spoken-word rendition of Ben Dorman’s Romeo’s Lament. Michael Shoults brought humor and warmth as FRIAR LAWRENCE. Leoni Anggela’s BENVOLIO was dramatic and heart-rending. All the members of the supporting cast and ensemble — Toshiko Kojima, Daven Solomon, Tomoko Fukushima, Karuna Kokubu Veness, Yoko Toki, April Queitsch, Akemi Lima, and Shenal Balasuriya — filled in the show with energy, tension, and power. Thanks to the direction of Ana Valdes Lim and coordination by Assistant Director Valeriya Takazato, all these moving parts came together to create a stunning work of theatrical art.

Romeo & Juliet is an exemplary production, achieving every goal of NP’s mission as a community and learning theater. Through teamwork, diligence, and commitment, the Cast & Crew stuck together and weathered every storm. We lifted each other up when needed and helped each other grow. It was a wonderful experience that will forever be cherished.

２０２４年９月上演「ロミオとジュリエット」は名古屋プレイヤーズの殿堂入りを果たしたと言えるでしょう。それは、終始、観客を魅了し華々しく週末を飾っただけでなく、企画からキャスティング、オーディション、リーハーサルに至るまで新たな発見と数々の学び、そして、大きな達成感と自信を獲得できたからです。

演出を担当したアナ　ヴァルデス　リム氏は１年以上前に世界演劇史最大の劇作家シェークスピア作品の現代版を提案してくれました。制作にあたり、多国籍の観劇者に理解しやすくする為にどのように脚本を書いたらいいか、特に詩的なフレーズやストーリーの美しさをそのまま維持しながら慎重に変更と削除を繰り返し完成させました。その脚色された台本は時には批判を招くこともあるため、細心の注意を払い、複雑で厄介な作業でしたが、アナ氏の脚本は多くの手が施され創造性豊かで素晴らしい作品となりました。

劇中に組み入れた作曲家ベン・ドーマン氏によるオリジナル音楽は３曲の歌に振り付け用の音楽も加わりました。その振り付けはジェフ　フリッチ氏とヴァレリア　タカザト氏が担当し、その後、舞台稽古中盤に差し掛かった所で、マイケル　ショルツ氏が曲を追加し、ジョセフ　アンダル氏の曲も加わりました。

ヴォーカルコーチを務めたルイス　ダイ氏は「Home Sweet Home」「Requiem」を指導する傍、ルイス氏自身も「Requiem」を歌唱、悲劇的な劇終盤を完璧なソロで演出し、私たちの心にずっしりと重く悲しみが込み上がりました。そして、全ての音楽、歌、サウンドデザインはショーン　マーラー氏が担当し、素晴らしい音楽効果を醸し出したと思います。

ロミオ役ブルーノ　ベルトラン氏は元名古屋プレイヤーズメンバーで再び舞台に返り咲きました。初舞台であったティアラ　ベネラギャマ氏が演じるジュリエットと２人でキャストを導き、大役を任されましたが、強固な意志を貫き見事に演じ切ってくれました。ブルーノ氏にとっては英語が母語ではないため古典英語の台詞はなおさら困難でしたが、練習を重ねる毎に台詞の英語力が高まり演技も上達させて役柄に磨きがかかりました。ティアラ氏も同様にこの舞台で開花した一人でした。ラブシーンを自然に演じる方法に努力を重ね、何ヶ月もの舞台稽古の後にはその努力は報われ、情熱的でロマンティックな悲劇のヒロインを完成させました。

ベテランの演者たち、山本あつみ氏はお茶目な乳母役を演じ絶賛の評価を得て、マキューシオ役のエミリー　ベイリー氏は艶かしいマキューシオを表現し、ロミオとの友人関係を面白く演じてくれました。

その他の出演者、初めて舞台に上がる人達や２回目の人達も其々の役を素晴らしく表現することができました。ティボルト役のルイス　ダイ氏はシャープな悪役を演じ、リチャード　ハリス氏が演じた如何わしい薬師はとても奇妙で忘れ難いシーンでした。キャピュレット卿

の塩川あきひこ氏は彼の素のままの力強い演技でした。キャピレット夫人、ナンディーニ　シャー氏と大公役の井田あすみ氏は体の奥底から発する迫力のある声で感情的なシーンを表現しました。コリー　マジェンスキー氏の演技は圧巻で、ベン　ドーマン氏作曲「Romeo’s　Lament」は深い悲しみを込めてロミオの嘆きを歌い語り、大きな涙を誘いました。マイケル　ショルツ氏はユーモアたっぷりのローレンス神父を演じました。ベンボリオ役のレオニ　アンジェラ氏はドラマティックで厳密な演技でした。その他アンサンブルで登場した小嶋としこ氏、福島ともこ氏、土岐ようこ氏、デイヴン　ソロモン氏、カルナ　コクブ　ヴェイネス氏、エイプリル　クワイチ氏、アケミ　リマ氏、シェナル　バラスリヤ氏、全ての人の役柄が集結しエネルギッシュな舞台を演出しました。

演出家アナ　ヴァルデス　リム氏とアシスタントのヴァレリア　タカザト氏のチームワークは絶妙で輝やかしく華やかな舞台芸術を創造しました。

名古屋プレイヤーズは演劇コミュニティーの発展と演劇を通した学びを得ることを目標に活動を続け、そのミッションを達成する為には「ロミオとジュリエット」は最も最適なプロダクションだと思います。

キャストとスタッフ一同がチームワークと不断なる努力と献身的な態度で一丸となり、分かち合い、互いに支え合い、困難を乗り越え、一つの目標に向かって作品を築きあげました。この素晴らしい経験とかけがえのない仲間達との思い出は一生の宝物となり大切にしていきたいと思います。
