イソップ物語•英語でのプレゼンテーション Wrap Up
We’ve done many workshops leading up to Aesop’s Fables, but this one was especially cool. The students at Xlingual along with members of the show got together for an evening of learning, interesting conversation and lots of drinks!
私達は「演劇イソップ物語」に先だって数多くのワークショップを実施しましたが、中でも今回は特に面白いものだったと思います。エクスリンガル語学学校の生徒と劇団員が集い、お酒を片手に楽しく学んだり会話を交わしたりして、夕べのひと時を過ごしました。
Shawn Mahler, director of Aesop’s Fables, kicked off the event by giving the participants an Aesop Quiz. There were a few lucky guesses but sadly no perfect scores. Mr. Mahler then began the night’s presentation with a look at the history of Aesop and the origins of the fables.
まず初めにイソップ物語の総監督ショーン・マーラーが、参加者の皆さんにイソップクイズを出しました。惜しい答えもいくつかあったのですが、残念ながら全問正解者はいませんでした。次にマーラー氏は、作者イソップの生涯とこの物語の成り立ちについてプレゼンを行いました。
Participants learned what makes a fable different from a story and what makes a moral important. We had a lively discussion about morality and how morals from ancient times are still relevant today.
そこでは寓話と物語の違いと、なぜ教訓が大切なのかを学びました。さらに、道徳性についてと大昔の教訓がなぜ今も全く色あせていないのかについて、活発な議論が交わされました。
After a quick wine and cheese break participants returned for the second half of the night’s activities. The session started with a more in-depth discussion of the fables. We learned who used them and why. Participants were taught new and useful vocabulary to help them with the discussion. We focused our conversation on the topic of Power. The true meaning of the fables is about how power works in society. We discovered what it means to be Powerful and Powerless and how these ideas can apply to Japanese society.
ワインとチーズの短い休憩をはさみ、ワークショップの後半はイソップ物語についてより深く話し合う事で始まりました。誰がなぜこの寓話集を利用したかを学んだあと、参加者は議論に役立つ語彙を教わりました。今回、会話のテーマとして私達は「権力」に焦点を当てました。この寓話の真意は、社会における権力の仕組みについて語る事です。私達は「力を持つ者」になる事と「力を持たぬ者」になる事の意味について学び、またこれらの概念が日本社会にも当てはまるのではないかという事に気づきました。
We ended the night with some very entertaining original fables. Armed with new knowledge and many alcoholic beverages participants formed two storytelling teams. They were given instructions on how to create a fable with a moral. We heard the tale of The Beautiful Crane and the Lazy Boar and The Independent Bird and the Trapped Cat. There were some very creative minds at work and the fables had us all laughing.
この晩の締めくくりは、楽しくて独創的な寓話の創作でした。新しい知識とお酒から力を得た参加者の皆さんは、2つのチームに分かれてお話を作りました。その際のルールは、必ず1つ教訓を入れる事でした。1つめのお話は「ツルとものぐさなイノシシ」、そしてもう１つは「野の鳥と飼いネコ」です。どちらも独創性に富んでいて、私達は皆大いに笑いました。
This was the first of our workshops designed for adult English-learners. We were very happy to see so many people with varying language abilities get along and communicate with each other. Don’t be shy, the English at our events is very easy. Even if you’re a beginner you can participate. Please join us for our next workshop. You’ll learn a lot and have a good time too!

Interview with Aesop’s Fables ‘Aesop’, Biagino Cristiano

There are very few who can boast of a career spanning more than 20 years of theatrical performance in Japan.
For as long as we’ve known him Biagino Cristiano has never missed a beat. Year after year he takes the stage performing roles from drunken tenors, to wandering monks, to his now penultimate role as Aesop in our upcoming production of Aesop’s Fables.
Biagino’s dedication and passion for performance is unrivaled. He gives his best every time and his portrayal of the legendary Greek storyteller is one for the ages.
Biagino sat down with us to talk about the history of English theater in Nagoya, some of his favorite roles, and offers up a little insight into the world of Aesop.

Our rising starlet Amy Braun sits down for a short interview about Aesop’s Fables.
Amy plays our villain in the show, ‘Betty’. While Amy is naturally a bright and lovely woman, ‘Betty’ is an explosive and spoiled brat! Amy has done a wonderful job getting into character. ‘Betty’ is a tour de force and really amazing to see to in person. You will not soon forget her.

名古屋プレイヤーズはプロの手品師ジョー・ハインドマン氏をお迎えして「Mr. Joe’s ESL Magic Class」を開催します。マジックだけでなく英会話まで習えるこのワークショップは、Mr. Joeの現代的で素晴らしいマジックとイリュージョンのショーで始まります。
ショーの後には、Mr. Joeがマジックをカッコ良く演じるコツを伝授してくれます。これらは全てプロの手品師が実際に使うテクニックです。ご家庭や学校または職場などで、一芸を披露してみてはいかがですか？

このワークショップは約60分で11：30、13：30、14：30の3回行われます。マジックショーと手品のレッスンは全て英語で行います。お子さんだけでなく親御さんもぜひご参加いただき、一緒に手品と英語を学んでみて下さい。
参加者全員にもれなくMr. Joeオリジナルのマジックキットがついてきます。ワークショップではこのマジックセットを使って指導し、また、ご家庭にお持ち帰りいただきマジックを試してみることもできます。

Interview with Aesop’s Fables ‘Crow’, Atsumi Yamamoto

We’ve been so impressed with this young lady! Atsumi has been working extremely hard on her performance and English skills. She has done such an amazing job developing her character and becoming the ‘Crow’. It really is a treat to watch her on stage.
Atsumi sat down for a video interview to talk a little bit about her background, Aesop’s Fables and the challenges of being a Japanese actor in an English show. She also offers up a few tips on how Japanese can improve their English through drama. Please give it a watch, it’s quite inspiring.

Auditions/オーディション! The Gift of the Magi
SYNOPSIS
The classic story of gift-giving and personal sacrifice by O. Henry has been adapted for stage and given a romantic and comical spin by playwright Jon Jory.
The story centers on the young but poor couple of Della and Jim. Their love for each other is unquestionable and their only desire is to see to the other’s happiness. Christmas is approaching and neither have the money to buy a proper gift. Unbeknownst to each other, Della and Jim both make great personal sacrifices in order to procure the money needed. A special and memorable lesson is learned by all when they realize that the gift of love is more valuable than anything money can buy.

Actors will be asked to perform a short scene from the play. Audition materials will be provided beforehand.
This is an Open Call. We are looking for performers of all levels. Beginners are welcomed. Our shows are designed to give opportunities to first-timers. Training and skill development is offered throughout the course of the production.
Space is limited so please RSVP by filling out the form below. Scheduling will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. We will also be taking sign-ups for cast, crew and volunteers.
SHOW
The Gift of the Magi will be performed Dec. 7-8 2019 at Higashi Playhouse. The show will be approximately 60 minutes in length. Three performances per day. Tech and Dress Rehearsal is Dec. 6th. Performers will also need to be available on this date.
REHEARSALS
Rehearsals will be scheduled from June-Dec 2019, primarily on weekends. Sundays are preferred. Rehearsals occur weekly and attendance is required. We typically rehearse from 3-5 hours per session. If you’d like to take a role in the show, please make sure your weekends are flexible from June-Dec.
A detailed rehearsal schedule will be available at Auditions.

Since 1975 Nagoya Players has staged over 80 productions that have ranged from the scale and grandeur of Shakespeare, inspiring musicals, locally written dramas to even intimate black box productions. Nagoya Players appreciates the craft of theater in all of its forms, and is dedicated to bringing English and bilingual theater to the center of Japan through the passion and efforts of its international members.
We are a learning theater, so no experience is necessary to join us. We encourage the mentoring of new and undiscovered talent. We are a not-for-profit group and so all positions on our shows are performed on a voluntary basis.
