Nagoya Players is thrilled to announce auditions for our upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

ABOUT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of history’s greatest playwrights. He is the author of numerous plays, sonnets, and poems; renowned for his explorations of love, power, ambition, and human nature. For over five centuries, his contributions to the world of theater and literature have been influencing artists and audiences worldwide.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays. The original story was set in the Italian city of Verona and revolved around the passionate love between two young members of feuding noble families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Themes of love, fate, youth, and destruction are presented for the audience with both humor and heartbreak.

In this new adaptation, we will keep in place the love, romance, and tragedy while at the same time incorporate elements of music and dance. Show Director, Ana Valdes Lim, has carefully re-envisioned the script for modern audiences with faster pacing and visual appeal. The show will be performed in Shakespearean English with modern set and costume.

AUDITIONS

Auditions will be held, in-person, Sunday, Nov. 19 & 26 at IPE Academy in Imaike. Please RSVP via the form on our website. Auditions typically take about 20 minutes. Audition materials will be provided beforehand.

Romeo & Juliet is scheduled to take stage September 2024. Rehearsals will be in-person at Uchiyama Community Center in Imaike on Sundays. The show will be directed by Ana Valdes Lim.

AVAILABLE ROLES

There are many roles, large and small. Veteran performers and those new to theater are all welcome.

ROMEO (MONTAGUE)	Lead	Male	Only son of Lord and Lady Montague, handsome, passionate, sensitive, impulsive, immature, bright, likable, romantic, idealist.
JULIET (CAPULET)	Lead	Female	Only daughter to Lord and Lady Capulet. Beautiful, passionate, obedient, sensitive, witty, courageous, intelligent, intense, likable, headstrong, romantic. She is passionate and falls in love with Romeo against her family’s wishes. She starts the play as an obedient child, but transforms into a strong, brave, headstrong woman.
LORD MONTAGUE	Supporting	Male	Father of Romeo. Enemy of the Capulets. Married to Lady Montague. He has an oldfeud with the Capulets. He is concerned Romeo will get involved with the fighting. He does not want Romeo involved in the fighting.
LADY MONTAGUE	Supporting	Female	Mother of Romeo. Enemy of the Capulets. Motherly, compassionate, and kind, shedoes not want Romeo involved in the fighting.
LORD CAPULET	Supporting	Male	Father of Juliet. Enemy of the Montagues. Lord Capulet is the patriarch of the Capulet family, and he commands respect. Strong, wealthy, hot tempered, opportunistic, bombastic, he wants the best for his daughter.
LADY CAPULET	Supporting	Female	Mother of Juliet. Enemy of the Montagues. Strong, beautiful, manipulative, wealthy, dismissive, snobbish, high status. She does not have an ideal romantic view of love or marriage.
NURSE	Supporting	Female	Servant. In service with the Capulets for many years. She is the personal servant and guardian of Juliet. She serves as a messenger for Romeo and Juliet. She sometimes makes inappropriate remarks.
MERCUTIO	Supporting	Neutral	Good friend of Romeo, impetuous, impulsive, witty, loud, carefree, fantastical, rebellious. Good with a sword, Mercutio is a blood relative of the Prince and Count Paris.
TYBALT	Supporting	Neutral	A Capulet, Tybalt is the cousin of Juliet on her mother’s side. He is arrogant, vain, fashionable, snobbish, aggressive, violent, hot-tempered, and extremely proper. He hates the Montagues. A Skilled fighter.
BENVOLIO	Supporting	Neutral	Romeo’s cousin and best friend. Benvolio is kind, helpful, honest, genuine.
PARIS	Supporting	Male	He is a Count, well behaved, wealthy, polite, and formal. He is a kinsman to the Prince. He feels he is well matched to Juliet, and behaves as if they are already married.
FRIAR LAURENCE	Supporting	Neutral	Friend of Romeo and marries Romeo and Juliet secretly. A wise and moderate peacemaker.
PRINCE	Supporting	Neutral	Prince wants peace and is neutral about the family fight. He threatens death or banishment to any person who continues to fight in the streets. He banishes Romeo to Mantua, never to return from this exile.
FRIAR JOHN	Ensemble	Neutral	He is assigned to carry an important message to Romeo in Mantua, but fails to deliver the message.
BALTHASAR	Ensemble	Neutral	Romeo’s dedicated servant who brings news of Juliet’s death.
SAMSON	Ensemble	Neutral	Servant of the house of Capulet. Hates the Montagues and initiates a fight with them.
GREGORY	Ensemble	Neutral	Servant of the house of Capulet. Hates the Montagues and initiates a fight with them.
ABRAM	Ensemble	Neutral	Montague servant who hates Samson and Gregory and fights them.
APOTHECARY	Ensemble	Neutral	Sells illegal lethal poison to Romeo.
CHORUS	Ensemble	Neutral	Narrator for the prologue of the play.

SINGERS & DANCERS

There will also be Ensemble roles available for performers who’d like to sing and/or dance on stage. We have several musical numbers planned and invite anyone with singing and dance backgrounds to audition for the show.
