Our Town•「わが町」Wrap Up
(日本語は英語に続く) When we started pre-production for Our Town in 2019 I don’t think anyone on the team could have imagined it would take nearly three years to get it to stage. And while the past three years weren’t always easy, they weren’t bad either. There are so many stories behind the scenes that it’s impossible to recount them all. There are tales of love, hate and romance. Of heartbreak and loss. Frustration and anger. The difficulties were many and great, but all of them were overcome. There will never be another production like Our Town.
After three years of diligence and sacrifice we were finally able to perform for the public again and we couldn’t be prouder of this production. From the front line actors to the minor characters, everyone gave a stupendous effort. Joe Sichi’s vision for the show was both unique and resonant. The backstage crew worked hard to make sure everything went perfectly. And it all did. Our Town was a brilliant show. It was an excellent reminder of the power of performance and why we create theater. Our Town spoke to the audience in a way that was both deep and personal. I believe we all left Chikusa Playhouse with a deep sense of gratitude and respect. And relief;)
I really can’t explain how we as a team, the Cast & Crew, managed to remain so focused for such a long time. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it before. It has been a humbling yet inspiring undertaking. Nagoya Players is truly made up of a special and talented core of creatives, performers and administrators. Our Town presented several unprecedented challenges and through teamwork, determination and friendship we met each in turn and found success.
I’ve been racking my brain for a way to encapsulate all that Our Town was and is. For now, I’ll rely on the words of the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson to aid me:
To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.

「わが町」の制作が始まった２０１９年、誰が想像したでしょう。この舞台を踏むまでに３年もかかるとは。
そして、３年間の道のりは楽だったというわけではないが、悪かったわけでもなく、愛と憎しみとロマンス。傷ついたり、心病んだり、ストレスや怒りを感じたり、色んなドラマが展開されました。が、メンバーみんなで力を合わせ苦難を乗り越え、かつてない素晴らしいプロダクションに成長することができ、とても誇りに思います。
公演は３年の月日を経てやっと上演に辿り着き、表舞台に立つキャストも裏方のスタッフも一同が協力しながら、その日を迎え、成功裏に終わったこと大変感謝しています。
なかなか目に止まらない舞台裏のスタッフもずっと舞台袖で非常時に備え待機していました。
監督のジョー・シチはユニークな発想で楽しませてくれたこともこの舞台が特別であったことの要因の一つです。「わが町」はパフォーマンスアートが人に与える影響力や幸福感を再確認させてくれ、人々の心の奥深くにまで響く舞台となりました。私たち一同、心から深く感謝し敬意と安堵の気持ちで千種文化小劇場を後にしました。
キャストとスタッフ一同はこの長い間、チームとしてのまとまりをどのように維持してきたのでしょうか。私自身、かつて経験したことがない長い期間のプロダクションでしたが、キャストも制作者も芸達者でクリエイティブなメンバーで、前例のないチャレンジ精神とチームワークと友情に支えられ素晴らしい作品を創り上げ、成功に導きました。
私自身「わが町」の制作で得た希にない経験をどのように表現すればよいのか、考え続けてきました。そこでラルフ・ワルド・エマーソンの有名な詩を引用してみたいと思います。

Interview with Our Town’s Holly McNamee
(日本語と英語の字幕) Holly is a new(ish) arrival to Nagoya and has already made a splash on the performing arts scene. She has an extensive background in dance and theater and she’s done such an incredible job in her new roles as MRS GIBBS. We’re very excited to see her take the stage in Nagoya Players’ upcoming production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

こども食堂 QChan
(English Below) 名古屋プレイヤーズ及び名古屋プレイヤーズジュニアは非営利団体で、活動により得られた収益金は地域の社会貢献活動に役立てられます。
この度、第２回チャリティーショーケースから100,000円の収益があり、その全額をこども食堂Qchanへ寄付致しました。こども食堂Qchanは支援を必要とする子供達またはその家族に暖かい食事を提供している団体です。
愛知県下にはこども食堂が１３７箇所ありますが、平日月曜日から金曜日まで毎日暖かい食事を無料で提供している所は数少なく、名古屋市には３箇所あります。こども食堂Qchanはその３箇所の中の一つです。
こども食堂Qchanでは平均１日３０食程度、多い時は５０食ほどの暖かい手作りの夕食を無料で提供しています。名古屋プレイヤーズJr.に携わった方々のご協力により、地域の子供達への食育活動に貢献できることを心から感謝いたします。
名古屋プレイヤーズJr.は２０１９年に活動を開始し、参加した子供達の努力とそのご家族のご協力、観客の皆様のおかげで、２回の公演を実現いたしました。今後も実践的な生きた英語の学びの場を子供たちに提供し、同時に地域の子供たちへの支援活動を継続していきたく、引き続き多くの方々のご協力を賜りますよう宜しくお願い致します。

Nagoya Players and Nagoya Players Junior are not-for-profit, community groups. We are always looking for ways to give back to the community that has supported us.
We are happy to announce that we have made a donation of ¥100,000 to こども食堂 QChan. こども食堂 QChan is part of a network of 子供食堂 (Kitchens for Children in Need) that provides hot meals to children and their families who would otherwise not have anything to eat.
こども食堂Qchan is one of the very few kitchens that serves meals daily (Mon-Fri). Up to 30 families a night are provided dinners free of charge. It is an incredibly challenging task they are performing and we are happy to support them in their effort. We hope that the money raised through the Nagoya Players Junior Showcase will aid them in their mission to nourish these children.
Nagoya Players Junior began in 2019 and in that time we’ve been able to produce two shows featuring troupes of extremely talented youngsters. The project continues to grow and see success. We sincerely thank everyone who has contributed. Proceeds from these productions will be donated to local charity. Your support of the children we feature on stage also supports children in need. This has been a very fun and fulfilling project that we hope to continue for many years to come.

Chu Chu Tuesday with the Cast of Our Town
Join us May 10th, 21:30-22:30 (JST) for Chu Chu Tuesday featuring the leads of Nagoya Players’ upcoming production Our Town, Emily Bailey and Shinsuke Tsuda.
Chu Chu Tuesday is hosted by local Nagoya singer, songwriter and comedian May Chu Chu. It’s a fun-filled hour of quirky tales from Japan with a few songs and jokes sprinkled in;)
Ms. Chu Chu will be interviewing Emily and Shinsuke about the unique and inspirational production of NP’s Our Town. Please tune in to hear some behind the scenes stories, see a little drama on the interwebs and have a few laughs.
We sincerely thank May Chu Chu for inviting us to her show. May Chu Chu is a British musician, singer and versatile comedy cabaret entertainer based in Nagoya, Japan. She’s influenced by a variety of British comedy styles – from the simple pleasures of the more innocent music hall era, to the bizarre, unhinged, anarchic vulgarities of Monty Python, & the Young Ones.
She regularly has Nagoya in stitches on stage, as well as running her own mid-week livestream comedy & music show on YouTube, Chu Chu Tuesday.
Thornton Wilder 125th Anniversary
April 17th, 2022 marked the 125th birthday of Thornton Wilder. To celebrate his fantastic and everlasting works the Thornton Wilder Estate has partnered with a host of theatrical and literary organizations to create a series of events and talks about the famed author and playwright.

先日開催されました２０２２春チャリティショーケースは予想以上の多くのお客様に観覧頂き１公演は満席、２公演はほぼ満席となりました。このショーケースでは子供達による初めてのミュージカル「Rainbow Connections: The Land of Kindness」に挑戦しました。英語でAct & Danceプログラムに参加した子供達は練習を重ね、素晴らしい演技を披露し、誰でも頑張れば目標が達成できることを証明してくれました。
今回はジェフ先生が特別に舞台を率い、タップダンスでショーの幕開け。同時に観客の皆さんにもClap-Tap(手でタップ）を指導し、観客が手のタップでリズムをとり、舞台のダンサーたちが足でタップダンス、舞台と観客が一体となってダンスショーが繰り広げられました。前列に座っていた子供達も一緒に体を動かしタップしている様子が可愛らしく印象的でした。
次にマジック・ジョーが繰り出すマジックは観客の目を釘付けに。まず、会場に来る途中で「ひったくり」にあい「お金をすられてしまった」話から始まりました。でも、「すられたお金」はもちろん、マジックで戻ってきましたよ。また、マジック・ジョーのお得意なトリック、目の錯覚を起こす「新聞を使った手品」を披露。とても不思議なトリックです。
そして、最後はショーケースのメイン演目ミニミュージカル「Rainbow Connections」です。これは、ジェフ先生のオリジナル作品でベン・ドーマン氏が作曲。
約１年をかけて準備を重ね、子供達の英語の指導やパーフォマンススキルを磨きました。子供達はセリフ全部を英語で学び、ダンスも学びました。練習を始めた頃に比べて、子供たちは目覚ましく上達しかつ成長し、最終的には素晴らしい作品を作り上げてくれたことに非常に感動しました。「Rainbow Connections」はリズミカルで観客を楽しませてくれるファンタスティック・アドベンチャー。名古屋プレイヤーズJr.の歴史に残る作品となりました。
会場に足を運んで頂いた観客の皆さん、舞台制作に携わった多くのボランティアの方々に心から感謝申し上げます。
また、多くの方々より賛賞のお言葉を頂き大変嬉しく思います。次回のAct/Dance Wrokshopへの申し込みも既に満員となり、ありがとうございました。
次回の公演は２０２２年１２月１７日（土）１８日（日）を予定しています。Jeff先生とミュージシャン・ベンとのコンビが再びリズミカルなミュージカルを用意しています。

Nagoya Players Junior Showcase Spring 2022
NP Junior is back and stronger than ever:) The Spring 2022 Showcase was a phenomenal success on so many levels. We were able to more than double attendance, selling out one show and nearly selling out two more. This Showcase also featured NP Junior first children’s musical, Rainbow Connections: The Land of Kindness. This musical achieved everything we hoped it would. The kids in our Act & Dance in English programs displayed their incredible talents as performers and dancers. We all learned that with commitment and practice we can accomplish any goal!
This year we had a very special host for the event, Jeff-Sensei. Jeff got the show started with some toe-tapping dance and was then joined by his team from Eigo de Tap. Together they taught the audience how to Clap-Tap. The audience provided the rhythm and the dancers moved their feet. It was a really fun and interactive performance. There were many children in the front rows eager to jump and dance along with Jeff and his tap dancers!
Next, Magic Joe once again stumped audiences with his bag of tricks. He told a story about being robbed on the street! But it was okay because he magically got his money, watch and ring back:) He also showed us one of our favorite tricks, The Illusion of the Torn and Restored Newspaper. It’s one of the coolest things we’ve ever seen and it always leaves the audience absolutely stunned.
And the finale of the Spring Showcase was an original musical, Rainbow Connections, written by Jeff-Sensei and with music by Ben Dorman. This production took almost one year to prepare. The kids participated in English and performance skill training during this time. They had to learn the entire script in English, then how to act and perform it, and finally to dance. So, many skills were involved. At the beginning of the production we weren’t sure if they would be able to do it all. But how wrong we were! Week after week we watched them grow and get stronger. It was a fascinating process. The end result was a funny, fast-paced, fantastic adventure. Rainbow Connections will forever be a highlight in NP’s long history.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended and for everyone who contributed to the making of this show. We have received quite a lot of praise and it is truly humbling. Sign-ups for the next series of Act & Dance workshops have been so great that we’ve gone over capacity!
A second Showcase for 2022 is scheduled for December 17-18 at Youth Square. We’re bringing you another musical and the team of Jeff-Sensei and Ben will be back with more amazing dance routines and music.
We’ve also been able to create a sizeable donation for local charity(s) through this project. We will make an announcement soon about the donation and the charity(s) we will be able to support. (日本語は英語に続く) What a great weekend! Aichi Vision 2022 was a big success and we were so happy to be a part of it. It was two full days of music, theater, magic, dance and short films. It was so wonderful to see so many talented artists come together to put on an entertaining and inspiring event. Kudos to organizers Joe Sichi and Tim Lennane.
Nagoya Players presents The Vagina Monologues was an absolute crowd pleaser. We couldn’t have hoped for a better show. The entire cast delivered impactful and memorable performances. From Emily Bailey’s journey through trauma to discovery, Steph Patterson’s revelations on hair and cheating husbands, Amy Braun’s tearful retelling of being a rape survivor, Atsumi Yamamoto’s delightful discovery of her body and self, Leona Cameron’s painful memories of shame and self-loathing, Naudia Patterson’s in your face anger, and KiraKira Kiss’ stimulating and exhilarating moaning; every monologue was delivered with gravitas and passion. It was so exciting to be in the audience and watch these women perform TVM for the next generation.
Our sincerest thanks to all those who came to see the show. The response has been overwhelming. TVM is definitely something we look forward to putting on again in the future.

愛知ヴィジョン2022は２日間の公演を大成功にて終えることができ、私たちもその一端を担えたことを大変嬉しく思っています。２日間にわたり繰り広げられた音楽、芝居、手品、ダンス、そしてショートムービー、どれも素晴らしく、こんなにも大勢の素晴らしいアーティストの方々が一同に会し、イベントを盛り上げたことがなによりも素晴らしいことだと思います。

山本温美は、明るく会場が笑い声で溢れる演技で、女性の身体への気付きを。
リオナキャメロンは、辛い経験からの自己嫌悪を。
ナディアパターソンは迫真の表情で怒りを。
キラキラ⭐️キスのとても刺激的でセクシーな喘ぎ声。
どの独白も俳優たちの真剣な演技で心に響くものでした。
観客の皆さまにも、とても高評価を頂いており、是非、若い世代が見るべきだとのご意見を多数頂きました。
公演にお越しくださいました皆様にこの場をお借りして御礼申し上げます。本当にありがとうございました。皆さまのご意見や思いの強さは私たちを強く圧倒しています。
近い将来必ずこのヴァギナモノローグを再演する必要があると確信しています。
いつも素晴らしい写真を撮影して下さる、私たちの専属カメラマンのジェフグリッグ氏にもこの場をお借りして感謝を伝えます。いつも俳優たちの一瞬の表情を逃さない写真は、私たちの素晴らしい記憶の記録となっています。
Our Town 2020-2021 Photo Shoot
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Fun Friday. This time we’d like to share some beautiful photos of the Our Town Cast (2020-2021) with you.
Photographer Geof Griggs really did an amazing job. He joined us for a morning out at Obata Ryokuchi Park. We didn’t have the whole cast with us, but we were able to capture some pretty stunning portraits.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to perform Our Town as scheduled in 2021. But we’ve gotten commitments from the majority of the Cast & Crew to return to the show! And we have new show dates in 2022 too! Please check our website and social media for future updates. You know what they say, “Third time’s a charm!”;)
