It’s fascinating to see the minds of children at work. Nagoya Players collaborated with local art and language school IPE Academy to design a project that would combine English education with the visual arts. And what resulted is the very wacky, yet very intriguing, Aesop Video-Storybook.
Five groups of children, ages 5-10, were each given a fable to illustrate scene by scene. The kids spent a total of 6 weeks learning the fables in English, while at the same time applying layer after layer of paint and texture until their masterpieces were complete.
Nagoya Player’s music director Robert Beatty laid down the soundtrack, and cast members Amy Bruan, Denise Hewitt and Naudia Patterson lent their voices to the fable readings. Aesop’s Fables show director Shawn Mahler then collected all the artwork and put everything together in video form for you to enjoy.
This project was done as part of Nagoya’s Players English Education Initiative (EEI).

子供達の想像の世界はとても頼もしいです。名古屋プレイヤーズはIPEアカデミーとコラボしイソップ物語ビデオストーリーを制作しました。
５歳から１０歳の子供達が５つのグループに分かれ、各グループが一つのお話の絵を描きました。始めにお話を英語で勉強し、描きたい場面を自ら選び、背景を描き、登場する動物を布の切り絵で仕上げました。
名古屋プレイヤーズの音楽担当ロバート・ビーティが各お話に音楽をつけ、キャストメンバーのエイミー・ブロン、デニース・ヘウィット、ナディア・パターソンがお話を朗読しました。そして、イソップ物語舞台監督ショーン・マーラーがこれら絵画、音楽、朗読を一つにまとめビデオに仕上げました。
この企画は名古屋プレーヤーズ（EEI:英語教育研究会）の活動の一環であります。
今回の企画制作に当たってIPEアカデミーに協力いただき感謝しています。

Audition Photography Workshop Wrap Up

Our first Audition Photography Workshop was an interesting and informative session hosted by the team of George Van Horn, John Ahern and Geof Griggs. We had an interesting mix of participants from children, to university students, to working adults and parents. It was fascinating to see and hear how this varied group viewed photography and it was even more fun to see them learn classic posing.
オーディション応募写真のワークショップ第1回は、ジョージ・ヴァンホーン、ジョン・アハーン、ジェフ・グリッグズ各氏を講師に迎えて開催され、面白く有益な講習会になりました。参加者の顔ぶれは、子どもからお父さん、お母さん、大学生、社会人までと、バラエティー豊かでした。それぞれの写真に対する考え方を知るのは大変興味深く、また典型的なポーズの型を学ぶ様子は見ていてさらに楽しいものでした。
Mr. Ahern started the workshop with some sound advice for people trying to break into acting in Japan. Looking the part and presenting yourself professionally are the keys to success.
ワークショップを始めるにあたり、アハーン講師が日本で演劇を志す人々に役立つアドバイスをしてくれました。いかに役を掘り下げ、自分自身をプロらしく表現できるかが成功へのカギなのです。
Then Mr. Van Horn gave a very detailed and insightful presentation covering topics like his experience as an actor on a Japanese drama, the role of agents, the hallmarks of good profile photos, and the principles of portraiture.
次にヴァンホーン講師がとても示唆に富んだプレゼンを行い、その中で自身が日本のドラマに出演した経験、エージェントの役割、良い応募写真の特徴、ポートレート写真の鉄則などを詳しく話してくれました。
Mr. Van Horn then lead the group with step by step instructions on how to achieve the classic ‘C’ and ‘S’ poses. And Geof Griggs was behind the camera making the magic happen.
それからヴァンホーン氏は、段階を踏んで代表的なCポーズとSポーズの取り方を指導しました。ジェフ・グリッグズ講師は、最高の瞬間を捉えるべくカメラを構えていました。
This is one of the most informative workshops we’ve organized and we’re planning on hosting it again. If you’re serious about acting and modeling this is a must-attend event.
今回のワークショップは、私達が今まで開催した中でも最も有益なものの一つで、もう一度行う事を計画中です。これは、真剣に役者やモデルを目指す方には絶対に見逃せないイベントです。

Interview with Aesop’s Fables Costume Designer, Shoji Fujii

Nagoya Players’ production of Aesop’s Fables is special for many reasons, but among the top are the truly amazing costumes designed by Shibori (Japanese tie-dye) Artist, Shoji Fujii.
Shoji sat down for a video interview with us to talk a bit about the 400-year-old art and craft of Arimatsu Shibori and his costume designs for the show.
Shoji’s costumes are some of the finest we’ve ever used and we encourage theater lovers in Aichi to see these spectacular creations in person and on stage.

WHAT TO EXPECT
ドゥ―ドルアートを楽しもう！
Doodle Art is an easy-to-learn form for artists and non-artists alike. Doodle Art lets us turn simple strokes into “seemingly” complicated patterns and fascinating works of art. Artistic skills aren’t a requirement for this workshop! You’ll be guided through each step by ZenArtist Naudia Patterson. Everyone in attendance will create their own Doodle Art masterpiece.
This workshop is family friendly. Parents with young children can learn Doodle Art together! And of course, older participants can Doodle on their own. Learn a simple and relaxing way to express your core artistic side. You will be surprised how easy it is to produce beautiful, stunning artwork!
ドゥードルアートは、絵画のプロもアマも同様に楽しく学べる画法です。ドゥードルアートを学べば、シンプルな線描がちょっと複雑な模様の素敵なアート作品に仕上がります。

講師
Naudia Patterson, English Language Teacher and ZenArtist
Naudia is a Jamaican medical professional who moved to Japan to pursue her passion for adventure and teaching. It was here that she rekindled the fire within her for the Arts. Two years ago she discovered Mandala Art and has since been using it as a means of active meditation for her own spiritual and personal growth. She incorporates “Doodle Art” in her creations. Her other artistic callings include poetry, drama and music (classical vocalist).
ナーディア・パターソン（英語講師、禅アーティスト）
ナーディアはジャマイカ出身で医療関係に従事していましたが、冒険と英語教育をこよなく愛し、それらを実践するために来日しました。そしてここ日本でアートに再び目覚めたのです。2年前曼荼羅アートに出会ってから、自身の精神と人格的成長を目指す“行動瞑想”の方法としてそれを用いています。作品にはドゥードルアートも取り入れています。ナーディアはまた詩人、役者、声楽家としても活躍しています。
Audition Photography Workshop
Audition Photography
If you’re interested in pursuing acting and/or modeling as a career, or even as a hobby, strong photography is a must. Headshots and portraiture are often the first and only things a talent agent or casting director will see. Professional looking photography can open doors to many opportunities, while amateurish photos might keep you from getting the recognition you deserve. Submitting photographs is often the first stage of a screening process many actors must go through in order to secure parts and roles for stage, film and television. It’s important to give yourself the best chance at success and having great a great portfolio is where it all starts.
What to Expect
Even to the untrained eye there’s a huge difference between a well composed headshot taken by an experienced photographer, and a snapshot taken by a friend with a smartphone. Headshots are carefully scrutinized and if something seems “off” or “unprofessional” it will shine a poor light on you, no matter how great your acting resume might be.
New actors and models can be easily mislead when it comes to getting their photos taken. While it might seem like just a simple formality, there is a reason why people leave it up to a professional. Knowing what factors can make your headshot stand out, what to expect when you meet with a photographer, and how to get the most out of your shoot, these are some of the things you will learn in this workshop that can help you get ahead in the game.
In this workshop veteran actors George Van Horn and John Ahern will discuss the role photography can play in your acting/modeling career, how to achieve your perfect “look”, and what to do with your photos once you’ve got them.
Portrait Photographer Geof Griggs will also be on hand to walk participants through the process of a photo shoot, and let them feel what it’s like to be in front of the camera.

Presenters
Geof Griggs, Portrait Photographer
California native and 20 year resident of Japan. Geof has over 35 years of photography experience and specializes in portrait, family, event, and street photography. He is particularly fond of outdoor and natural light settings. When working with actors and models Geof strives to achieve a real look and avoids staged shots.
George Van Horn, Actor
George Van Horn has experience with auditions as an actor and as president of a business that introduced talent to producers’ and directors’ auditions. Listen to his experiences auditioning as an extra for an NHK production, and as a talent rep to small and medium sized video and photography projects. Learn what producers and directors expect and how they choose. To support the talent that didn’t have professional photographs, he studied portrait photography and shot the photos needed to get them auditions. During the workshop he will explain and have participants practice classic posing, camera lens awareness, and how to work with a photographer.
John Ahern, Actor
Lost in Japan since 1990 Mr. Ahern has become a staple of Nagoya’s art scene. He’s been involved at every level, from TV commercials to train station Santa. He has an addiction to green M&Ms which we’re working very hard on curing. Even so, he remains a fount of knowledge and an important mentor to many new arrivals in the city.

“Heeee Haaaaw! Oh, that was great fun!”
Our first Aesop Storytime Kids Workshop was a blast! These little guys were amazing. So smart and very quick learners.
Cast member Naudia read to the children and imparted some very valuable morals upon their young minds. However, to break up all that morality she also lead the group through a series of games and challenges!
It wasn’t just playtime though, the children also did writing exercises and they got homework! Oh, what fun!
Thank you to the kids and parents for an exciting day of storytelling and learning. And a big thank you to IPE Academy for hosting us!

子供達はとても積極的に楽しく参加できました！！
キャストのナディアさんがとても為になるお話を子供達に読み聞かせ子供達の心にも届いたことでしょう。ゲームやアクティビティを通してもっと印象付けられたと思います。
その他にもワークシートでライティングも取り入れ、宿題のシートもありました。
参加してくれた子供達、協力いただいた保護者の方々、また、ワークショップを支援してくれたIPEアカデミー みなさんのご協力 本当にありがとうございました。

English Education Initiative (EEI)
Nagoya Players’ English Education Initiative (EEI) has been developed to encourage a life-long love of language study in the residents of Nagoya. From youth to adults we are creating materials and organizing events that will aid learners in the pursuit of mastering the English language. And have fun at the same time!
We firmly believe that early exposure to English is a key indicator for future success. Children who develop foreign language skills early in life routinely show improved performance at school and gain access to better career opportunities. So with each Nagoya Players’ show we also organize ‘Kids’, ‘Teens’ and ‘Adult’ English programs to encourage them to further pursue their studies.
EEI ( ナゴヤ・プレイヤーズ英語教育研究会）では英語習得を目指している名古屋の方々が楽しみながら英語をマスターできるようサポート活動しています。
なるべく早い段階で英語環境を作ることができるかどうかが生きた英語を身につける鍵だと考えます。
バイリンガルの子供達は月齢が早い段階で、その外国語環境を整えることにより外国語を身につけています。それは将来に向けての揺るぎない財産になることは間違いありません。そこで、私たち名古屋プレイヤーズは「子供」「中高生」「大人」を対象にしたプログラムを作成し英語環境作りをお手伝いしていきたいです。

Aesop’s Fables cast member Naudia Patterson will read 5 fables from the Aesop Storybook. After each fable Naudia will lead the group in an English game or activity.
Appropriate for Eiken levels 5~4 or ages 10~14

IPE Academy becomes Show Supporter
We are very happy to announce that IPE Academy is now an official Supporter of our upcoming production, Aesop’s Fables.
IPE Academy is unique amongst language schools in Nagoya. They provide instruction for both English and Japanese learners, but what sets them apart is their Art & Music based curriculum. IPE offers special programs for children to develop their language abilities alongside their creative.
Nagoya Players and IPE share many core values. We believe in the importance of arts education and finding ways to combine that with language development. They are the perfect partner for Nagoya Players’ English Education Initiative (EEI) and we look forward to working together with them.
Our first project will be the Study Aesop program. IPE will be hosting Aesop Storytime events in the lead up to the show. These workshops are great for young learners and will teach them a lot of useful vocabulary and phrasing before they see the show!
