Our Town Study Guide•「

Nagoya Players’ English Education Initiative is back with our latest offering for our upcoming production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, July 04-05th, Chikusa Playhouse.

The Our Town Study Guide has been developed for intermediate English learners and is appropriate for ages 13+. The guide is flexible enough to be used in large group classes or in private lessons. And for stronger English speakers it can be self-studied.

The Our Town show and Study Guide have both received stamps of approval from Aichi Board of Education and the Nagoya City Board of Education.

The exercises can be done in sections or studied from cover to cover. Go at your own pace. We hope it can be used by teachers and students in order to prepare them for the show.

English-learners who complete the Study Guide, watch the performance and then return to the classroom for post-show analysis and critique will benefit greatly from the experience.

The guide is print-ready and completely free to use and distribute.

If you have questions about the guide, the show or our English Education Initiative please email us at Info@NagoyaPlayers.org.

We hope the guide can be of use to you and motivates your students to further pursue their English and Arts studies.

In Loving Memory of Dave Olaf

The Nagoya community and the Nagoya Players have lost one of our most beloved. It is with a heavy heart that I write of the passing of Mr. David Olaf.

David was a performer in our group during a golden era of English-theater in Nagoya. Dave’s credits can be found in almost every show program throughout the 2000s. Show after show, Dave took the stage and delivered some of the city’s most memorable performances. He was Samuel Parris in The Crucible, Mr. Klemper in The Boys Next Door, Mr. Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, King in Toronto, Mississippi…just to name a few. Dave excelled at moving in and out of character and, no matter the role, always brought the energy and spirit needed.

As David retired from the stage as a performer, he sought out other ways to continue working in theater. He took on jobs as stagehand, ticket manager, and stage manager for a plethora of other productions. His passion for theater was pure and honest, and that is how I will always remember him.

I first met Dave on the production of Nagoya Players’ Anger. It was an intense production, and I’m so grateful he was there to support us through the hard times. Dave was always ready with his words of wisdom, corny jokes, and soothing voice. He could be off the wall and zany, but always came from a place of heart. He brought us together when we were fractured and lifted us up when down.

Sadly, in recent years, Dave found himself in the roles of cancer fighter and survivor. I was so impressed with the way he carried himself. In the face of such struggle, he remained the same bright, funny, joyous person. Never did the corny jokes stop, and the witticisms continued to pour. Even in his weakened state, he continued to make theater a part of his life. He remained an active member of our community and worked on shows for as long as his health permitted.

Thank you Dave for all you’ve done for Nagoya. All you’ve done for Nagoya Players. And for all you’ve done for me. You will truly be missed.

Postponed•延期 Hana-mi Meet N’ Greet

Due to recent concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus, NP has decided to postpone our Hana-mi Meet n’ Greet to a later date.

We still want to get all our NP members and fans together, so once it’s safe to congregate again we will announce a new event.

Sorry to disappoint everyone looking forward to the party, but given the circumstances we feel it’s the best decision to make.

If you have any questions please write to Info@NagoyaPlayers.org.

Thank you,
Shawn Mahler, Artistic Director Nagoya Players

Production History in Japan•『

Frank Craven, Martha Scott and John Craven in the original Broadway production of Our Town (1938), winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama

(English on Page 2)

Thornton Wilder Three Plays

Nagaoka Teruko

The Gift of the Magi Wrap Party

Nagoya Players Show Photographer Geof Griggs has done it again. Even when we’re drunk and stuffing our mouths Geof somehow finds a way to make us look great!

The Cast & Crew from NP’s 2019 Winter production The Gift of the Magi came together to have our official wrap party. It was a crazy night filled with singing, dance and costume. Looking out over the room at the many people, from many diverse backgrounds and with many amazing talents…everyone who worked so hard and stuck together to create such a beautiful show…it was a powerful sight to behold.

The Gift of the Magi was a milestone production. Perhaps there was a bit of serendipity involved, but there is no doubt this gathering of Cast & Crew put on a truly special and memorable performance. It’s a show we can’t stop talking about and it’ll be in our minds and hearts for years to come.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who supported, attended and worked on the show!

Nagoya Players is back in full swing for 2020. If you’d like to join us on an upcoming production as Cast or Crew please email us, NagoyaPlayers@gmail.com

We look forward to putting more amazing shows on stage for Nagoya to enjoy.

Announcing the Cast of Our Town

Nagoya Players is very pleased to announce the cast for our 2020 production of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Our Town.

We have a few returning faces and a lot of new talent to showcase in this production. Nagoya theater veterans Matt Smith, Allan Van Der, Ritchie Croan, John Ahern and Joe Sichi are all familiar and beloved faces. They’ll be joined on stage by newcomers to the scene Emily Bailey, Holly McNamee, and Becky Barelle. We also have a family of youngsters on stage with the adorable Uta Tsuchida and her brothers Rintaro and Nikichi. And most exciting of all is our collaboration with Meijo University’s Faculty of Foreign Language. Several students from Meijo’s drama program, lead by Prof. Masami Iwai, will be making their English-acting debuts.

This show achieves so many of the goals we’ve set for our group. The Our Town production will bring in a new batch of young talent that will receive guidance, instruction and training from our experienced pool of actors and artists. Experience and youth working together on one of the true classics of the stage is a beautiful thing to see. We’re very excited to put this amazing show together for the city of Nagoya to enjoy.
